Transit Wireless created a reliable system-wide high-speed wireless network that supports not only the current needs of New York City Transit, its operators, customers, and employees – but also their future needs. We built the network on scalable and interoperable high-density network architecture designed with specific transit system needs in mind.
We now deliver wireless communication services that are available to 6+ million NYC subway riders, hundreds of NYCT employees, public safety responders, and transit operators, as well as offering services to help with the continuous improvement of transit operations.
Design & Construction
Transit Wireless built the network on scalable and interoperable high-density network architecture designed with specific transit system needs in mind. Modular equipment and a segmented network enable agile technology adoption and support multi-tenancy and carrier-grade services.
Our experience working within the stringent safety and environmental demands of a legacy underground subway system has led to the development of specialized installation methods that sped project roll-out and minimized impact on riders. Through state-of-the-art techniques and project management discipline, we streamlined both the design and construction processes that enabled us to achieve substantial efficiencies, such as a reduction in required equipment and footprint.
The Transit Wireless neutral host Distributed Antenna System (DAS) network delivers the uninterrupted cellular connectivity throughout underground subway stations that carriers and their customers expect. From the platform to the street, strategically situated antennas enable the connected rider to continue a phone conversation, send an email, and stream media, all without interruption. Because it’s a neutral host network, we’re able to provide service from all four major U.S. mobile carriers: AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless.
We take end-to-end responsibility for in-station cellular connectivity. Beyond the platform, our high-speed fiber optic network connects to the respective carrier’s equipment located in a secure, climate-controlled, continuously monitored Transit Wireless Base Station Hotel.
Transit Wireless can also support cellular offloading and international roaming services.
Transit Wireless WiFi™, is a free service supported by a sophisticated advertising platform that became available in all underground New York City subway stations in January 2017. This is the ideal platform for advertisers and sponsors who seek to deliver their message to millions of subway riders.
Public Safety Applications
In a city that never sleeps, public safety is always on high alert. The Transit Wireless network was built with this in mind and now supports numerous essential public safety services within the transit system.
- Transit Wireless has created a secure, private Public Safety network for the New York City Transit Authority (NYCT) that operates in the 4.9 GHz spectrum via a MESH Wi-Fi network.
- Through our cellular connectivity, riders have the assurance of knowing they can dial 9-1-1 in an emergency from an underground station. Wireless carriers must comply with FCC requirements for Enhanced 911 – known as E911.
- Help Point kiosks that make both transit information and emergency services available with the touch of a button are connected via the secure Public Safety network.
- Opportunities to connect closed circuit television (CCTV) and security cameras through the Transit Wireless fiber optic network enable New York City Transit to monitor activities in real-time throughout the subway station environment. From entrances and stairways to the subway platforms, our high-speed network keeps stations connected, enabling 24/7 video monitoring capability.
- We also built capacity and scalability into the network to support future public safety applications such as the 700 MHz FirstNet LTE network.
In addition to the secure and private 4.9 GHz Public Safety network and E911, the Transit Wireless network is essential to other vital subway station public safety initiatives.

The Transit Wireless broadband network can provide secure connectivity for a wide range of electronic fare pay systems. From the current MetroCard payment system to MTA’s upcoming New Fare Payment System and future fare pay methods such as cellphones or credit cards, the Transit Wireless fiber optic network provides the infrastructure to leverage new technologies.
Transit Dedicated Fiber
The Transit Wireless fiber optic network provides a private, dedicated omnibus LAN within the subway system, allowing New York City Transit (NYCT) to control and manage its own network, as needed. Our fiber network will enable NYCT to upgrade, expand and take full advantage of future technologies for public safety use, thereby achieving a greater range of communications capabilities at low cost through the Transit Wireless public and private partnership.
The thousands of wireless network access points, servers, switches, RF nodes and antennas, more than 120 miles of fiber optic cable, the continuously operating Base Station Hotels and the thousands of other components that keep the Transit Wireless public safety network running require constant monitoring. Our fully-staffed Network Operations Center provides around-the-clock network monitoring and support, including onsite remediation when needed, 365 days a year.
